He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Wade Edwards Learning Lab in North Carolina and is a former member of the College of Charleston Alumni Board and the South Carolina Association for Justice, Lawyers of Distinction.

Ellis is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and the Charleston County Bar Association.
